Lord Khatu Shyam Ji is revered by devotees by several sacred names, including Barbarika, Sheesh Ke Daani, and Lakhdatar. His story is associated with devotion, courage, sacrifice, and complete surrender to the Divine.
Barbarika was the grandson of Pandava Bhima and Hidimbi and the son of Ghatotkacha and Maurvi. Through deep spiritual penance, he received three divine arrows from Lord Shiva. These became famous as the Teen Baan, or Three Infallible Arrows.
Before Barbarika left for the Mahabharata battlefield, his mother instructed him to support the side that was losing. This vow later became closely associated with the devotional expression:
“Haare Ka Sahara, Baba Shyam Hamara.”
The phrase reflects the faith that Shyam Baba gives hope and spiritual support to devotees during times of difficulty and uncertainty.
The story of Barbarika is especially remembered for his extraordinary act of charity known as Sheesh Daan, or the donation of his head. Lord Krishna appeared before Barbarika in the form of a Brahmin and requested his head as charity. Barbarika accepted the request without hesitation. His only wish was to witness the great Mahabharata war.
Moved by this sacrifice, Lord Krishna blessed Barbarika with the divine name Shyam. He was blessed to be worshipped in Kaliyuga and remembered as a source of grace and refuge for devotees. The sacred head was later associated with Khatu in Sikar, Rajasthan, where the famous Khatu Dham became an important centre of devotion to Shyam Baba.
Along with Lord Khatu Shyam Ji, devotees at the Australian mandirs can also offer prayers to Lord Hanuman and Lord Shani Dev.
शीश के दानी • लखदातारी
Shyam Baba is worshipped with faith by devotees seeking spiritual strength, guidance, grace, and peace. Bhajan, kirtan, Ekadashi worship, Nishan Yatra, and special offerings form an important part of Khatu Shyam devotion.
संकट मोचन • केसरीनंदन
Lord Hanuman represents devotion, courage, loyalty, and strength. As the devoted servant of Lord Rama, Hanuman Ji holds a special place in Hindu spiritual tradition. Devotees pray to Hanuman Ji for courage, protection, confidence, and the strength to face difficult situations with faith.
न्याय देवता • कर्मफल दाता
Lord Shani Dev is traditionally associated with karma, discipline, justice, and responsibility. Devotees worship Shani Dev with sincerity and offer prayers seeking spiritual balance and relief from difficulties. The temple also provides Shani Telabhishekam, allowing devotees to participate in traditional worship dedicated to Shani Dev.
Daily aarti is an important part of temple worship. The mandir provides devotees with opportunities to attend different aartis during the day.
The morning begins with awakening darshan and initial prayers.
The deity is beautifully adorned with fresh flowers and devotional decoration.
Naivedyam, fruits, sweets, and other sacred food offerings are presented to the deity.
The evening worship is performed with lamps, prayers, devotional chanting, and the sound of the conch.
The final prayer of the day is offered before the temple closes.
The temple also holds a special Shyam Kirtan on Shukla Ekadashi at 6:00 PM, while weekend Langar is organised from 1:00 PM.
Khatu Shyam Mandir Australia provides a variety of devotional services for individuals and families.
Devotees may organise Khatu Shyam Kirtan, Bhajan Sandhya, and Akhand Jyot worship at the temple or for suitable home-based devotional occasions. These spiritual gatherings bring families and devotees together through bhajans, prayer, music, and remembrance of Shyam Baba.
Families can offer Chhappan Bhog, traditionally consisting of 56 sacred food offerings, on occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, Ekadashi, and other auspicious days. The offering represents devotion and gratitude and is presented to Shyam Baba before being distributed as prasad.
The community hall may be booked for religious and family ceremonies including weddings, Mundan, Griha Pravesh, Annaprashan, anniversaries, and other auspicious occasions. The temple committee can assist families with hall availability, priest arrangements, and seating requirements.
Devotees may participate in the sacred Nishan Yatra, carrying Baba Shyam’s holy flag during special celebrations such as Falgun Mela and Ekadashi. The Nishan Yatra is an important devotional tradition in which devotees express their faith and gratitude to Shyam Baba through prayer, chanting, and procession.
The mandir encourages devotees to support or volunteer for free food distribution. Langar and Annadanam are offered during weekends and festival celebrations according to the temple programme. Serving food to devotees and visitors is regarded as an important form of seva and community service.
Devotees may sponsor pure desi ghee for the sacred Akhand Jyot maintained at the altar of Lord Khatu Shyam Ji. The continuously burning sacred flame represents devotion, divine presence, peace, and spiritual hope. Families may sponsor Akhand Jyot Seva on special occasions or as an expression of gratitude.
The temple gallery captures important moments from the spiritual life of the mandir, including decorated darshan of Lord Khatu Shyam Ji, Chhappan Bhog offerings, Nishan Yatra processions, Lord Shani Dev worship, evening Maha Aarti, and the Lord Hanuman shrine.
These images allow devotees to experience glimpses of temple celebrations, rituals, divine decorations, and community participation even when they cannot personally attend an event. The gallery also reflects the vibrant devotional atmosphere created during festivals, Ekadashi celebrations, special poojas, and community gatherings.
Devotees who wish to contribute towards temple activities can support various forms of seva. Contributions help with daily worship, prasad distribution, temple maintenance, spiritual programmes, and community activities.
Support from devotees helps the mandir continue its religious services and create a welcoming spiritual environment for the wider community.
Those making a contribution are requested to mention their name and the purpose of the donation in the payment reference. Devotees seeking a formal receipt may contact the temple committee using the official contact details or email hanumanmandiradelaide@gmail.com / Hanumanmandirsydney@gmail.com.
